The Sheds, Bolton

The Sheds (Bolton, where else?)

Much of my childhood and youth were spent at ‘the Sheds’ on Crescent Road. From 1965 I became an unoffical part of the shed staff, as a volunteer engine cleaner – along with mates Steve Leyland, Vernon Sidlow and Keith Pendlebury. Our first job was on 42626, specially cleaned to work the last train from Horwich on September 25th 1965. After that, there was no stopping us!

Not one of mine..but I’m there on the left, with Keith, having a go at Bolton 8F 48652

One of our favourites was green-liveried BR Standard class 5 73014. Here she is on June 3rd 1967, with Black 5 45260, about to leave the shed to work a Westhoughton Labour Club special to Blackpool. Driver Bert Welsby and fireman Malc Frost, accompanied by Cleaner Paul Salveson
Another view of ’14 and its sister at Bolton shed, about to depart to Rochdale where they picked up the 12-coach train for Blackpool. It was an all-night job cleaning ’14 and 5260, but worth it!
